An orientation seminar on “Educational Utilization Programme on Standardization and Quality Systems”

Click here to enlarge the ImageEUS Orientation programme was conducted by Bureau of Indian Standards partnered with SIEMA in our college on 24th Nov’2008. The motto of the programme was to inculcate awareness on Standards for Engineering Industries among students. The function was conducted under the chairmanship of Dr.S.N.Subbramanian. Dr.G.Karuppusami, principal of the college, welcomed the gathering and gave an introduction about the programme.
Shri.Varghese Joy, Director and Head of BIS, CBE, explain the objectives of the programme. He provided an overview of standardization, quality and the importance of the standards in engineering industries. Then special address was given by Dr.S.N.Subbramanian.
Shri.Jayakumar Ramdass, President, SIEMA, elaborated on the standards for industry. He explained how the standardization has enabled us to compete in the world market. The students were encouraged to have the four letter “slogan”: PDCA – Plan, Do, Check and Act to bring out their creative abilities.
This was followed by an elaborate account of how standards have been implemented in industries by Smt. G.Bhavani, Deputy Director, BIS. Her powerpoint presentation gave an insight to the importance of standards and created an awareness about how to look for instructions on the products.
After hearty refreshment, the technical session went on interestingly with interactive workshop. The Director, BIS tapped students inquisitive energy with simple questions like, “Why the three pin plug has got one pin longer than the other two?” Students actively participated to these down to earth questions and it lasted for an hour. Smt. Jessy Benny, Joint Director, BIS, started her speech with a lot of questions which made students came out with enthusiastic answers. It enabled the students to know more about the idea behind the formation of standards and product codes.
This programme was closed with vote of thanks by Prof.T.A.Selvan, Mechnical Engineering. Overall the programme was educative and enlightened the students with the knowledge of the importance of standards in industries.
